I grew up in north west London and came to Nottingham to go to university. Several decades on, I am still here! I was involved in setting up the Nottingham NFB branch 30 years ago. This means the branch is less than half my age! I have worked as an Equality Officer and Disability Officer in local government and for a university. I believe in fairness, equality and human rights for all. I am involved in campaigning for improved services, facilities, rights and access for people with a visual impairment and other disabled and vulnerable folk.
I enjoy swimming, but get little exercise due to a lack of organisation. I like going out for motorbike rides; now just riding pillion. I don’t wear the leathers any more as I am vegan. I also enjoy gardening and trying to grow food.
We have made some progress over the years in terms of improving access for people with a visual impairment, but sadly there is still a long way to go. Just when it feels like something is sorted out, you find out that a basic issue won’t be supported by an organisation. A great example is that a bank will provide info in a variety of formats, including audio CD, but won’t send electronic files on CD. I’ll keep on campaigning and working with other people for our rights!
