As the “Voice of blind people” NFBUK campaigns for all blind, deaf-blind and partially sighted people to have the same opportunities and access as all other UK citizens.
During its long history of almost 80 years, the Federation has had many successes.
Current campaigns include UK streets and public transport to be accessible to everyone. Against the introduction of bus stop bypasses and shared use bus boarders which are not safe for us to use. These are the bus stops where a passenger has to cross a cycle track to get on the bus. We don’t feel safe to use them because we cannot hear when cyclists are moving through. Now almost 300 other organisations have signed our petition supporting us. Surely this demonstrates that our campaign needs to be listened to and acted upon now!
Another issue of great concern to us is the use of e-scooters being driven on pavements and the obstruction of the footway by so many cycles. The footway is there for pedestrians, including us along with so many people who want to shop in their area or meet up with friends. We know that cyclists, quite reasonably, need places to leave or store their bikes; but so often those bikes are left blocking the pavement or abandoned in a way to cause danger and accidents. We all should be able to travel safely and thereby have fuller social and working lives.
The Federation does not receive any statutory or grant funding money from Government but relies entirely on the generosity and goodwill of its members and supporters to deliver our important and much needed work. We gratefully accept any donations you can give so that we can continue campaigning. No matter how small a donation you make, every penny will be gratefully received and used to improve the overall quality and welfare of daily life of blind, deaf-blind and partially sighted people in the UK.
