A shocking video shows a dangerous zebra crossing at a London train station, where people attempting to cross narrowly escape injury when cyclists fail to stop.
At one point, a man has to wait for fifteen cyclists to pass before one stops to let him cross at Blackfriars Station.
The footage was shared by NFBUK (National Federation of the Blind) on Thursday (May 14).
It was filmed during the evening rush hour on Wednesday by Sarah Gayton, the Street Access Campaign Coordinator for the campaigning charity.
NFBUK wrote on their social media post: “New zebra crossing at Blackfriars Station floating bus stop. We have tried to explain to @cityoflondon why these bus stops are not safe or accessible for blind people but more are being planned. @citylordmayor can we urgently meet to discuss our concerns please. This is dangerous.”
Floating bus stops are a road layout where a cycle lane runs between the pavement and a bus stop, requiring pedestrians to cross the cycle lane to board or alight from buses.
Sarah Gayton said: “Blind people simply cannot hear or see silent cyclists. It is impossible for them to detect them and they are keeping away from floating bus stops. It is a terrifying situation to be faced with when you cannot see and blind people will not use them. It’s like playing a game of Russian Roulette, which should not be the case when you simply want to catch the bus.”
TfL have been contacted for comment.
